HISTORY / OVERVIEW
On the morning of December 9, 1935 Coalhurst was a thriving coal mining town of 1,200 people. Shortly after 4:30 that afternoon tragedy struck in the form of a major mine disaster resulting in the death of sixteen miners. The closing of the mine that followed dealt a blow to the Town that would take forty years to recover. In the years that followed businesses and houses were moved out and the Town became a virtual ghost town, it was disincorporated and reverted to hamlet status. At its lowest point there were a mere handful of residents. The 1970's saw a renewed interest in the area and people started to look for a quiet place to live away from the city but close enough to have the benefits, and Coalhurst was the perfect answer.
Reincorporated in 1979 Coalhurst is a virtual new town rising from the prairies. A small, residential community where residents enjoy the amenities of large city living at a fraction of the cost.
